ECO-LORE Founded in 2022

Connecting the Environment & Culture.

Established in 2022 Eco-Lore is a new non-profit organization with a mission to connect environmental awareness with the cultural landscape. Edifying the human condition through the intersectionality of environmental sustainability and cultural expression tied to tradition and folklore. Eco-Lore is a nonprofit organization introducing communities to the importance and need for environmental sustainability for future generations and the visibility of marginalized cultures through environmental justice, ethics and cultural preservation. Ecosystems are living systems that function to sustain a certain quality of life. People have a symbiotic relationship with nature; without the resources the environment supplies, there would be no businesses or quality of life.

Eco-Lore is teaching the next generation why environmental stewardship is necessary for the human condition and how the environment connects to our cultural pathways and expressions. Another pillar Eco-Lore focuses on is cultural sustainability through traditional artistic expressions. Eco-Lore documents cultural expressions that represent African American history and arts. Some examples are music, oral history, community advocacy, and religion. Since its founding in 2022, Eco-Lore has provided workforce development workshops to meet our mission with students at the University of the District of Columbia, local K-12 schools, and the DC Police Academy. The foundation recently received a humanities award for Cultural Preservation Research and workforce development. In the near future, Eco-Lore will display its cultural research projects in online exhibitions on its website.
